As part of the global Havi Group, Havi Logistics Poland benefits from a long history of expertise in the deliverance of logistics services to the foodservice industry. Formally known as the Alpha Group, the company was founded in 1981 in Germany taking over the management of goods delivery to the McDonald’s restaurant emporium consisting of over 80 restaurants in the country at the time. Year by year the company expanded its capabilities throughout the European region until it had a comprehensive network of operational logistics subsidiaries. In 2002 the Havi Group bought the majority of the Alpha shares and in 2008 the entire network underwent a rebranding and image change. The Polish sector of the Group, previously known as Logpol, has been functional for 18 years and is now known as Havi Logistics Poland.
Operating across three main warehousing outlets, the company has two core distribution centres in Warsaw and Tychy near Katowice from which the two core clients of McDonald’s and BP are served, while a third interim warehouse serving BP alone is based in Poznan. Havi Logistics Poland has also just started building a new distribution centre to be based in Poznan that is set to be opened in June and will enable distribution from this area to both customers. McDonald’s has been the main client for Havi Logistics since inception and it was only at the turn of the 21st century that business strategies changed to welcome additional clients, starting with BP.
“We call this our business development strategy,” Andreas Röder, managing director of Havi Logistics Poland explains. “We are very happy to announce that we have just signed a contract with a new mid-sized foodservice chain in Poland, taking our customer base up to three. They have 60 sites across the country and we will begin to serve them with logistics solutions at the start of April 2010. We have changed from a single to a multi-customer business not only in Poland but also across the Group as a whole and this is part of a clearly identified target and programme throughout Havi Logistics to be the lead logistics provider for the food service industry.”
The Group’s goal is to be internationally recognised as a premier supplier of logistics and supply chain management for all areas of the foodservice industry including restaurant and hotel chains such as McDonald’s, as well as catering businesses and convenience stores such as BP. The company’s supply chain efficiency is based on a one-stop-shop concept, providing customers with a service likened to a wholesaler without making earnings on the trade margins in the same way. On the one hand, Havi offers physical logistics that incorporates collecting ambient, chilled and frozen goods from suppliers, warehousing, picking and distributing them together in one delivery according to individual orders, but it also offers a plethora of additional, value-added services.

The organisation’s IT facility and its close relationship with clients enables it to collect the sales information at customers’ point of sale and from this derive a precise demand and supply planning.
A sophisticated Goods Account System allows Havi to stringently and fully transparently monitor the daily buying and selling process with respective values and margins per customer. “A great deal of investment has been put into the advancement of a more information-driven supply chain. As a next step we can now offer to create order proposals and the customer can reject or change them. There is even further progress in the German faction of the Group where 300 sites are being served automatically with part of their assortment by a system where we simply deliver based on the information and forecasting we have in place, alongside the customer’s account, and this relieves as much burden as possible from the client,” Andreas notes.
Following the consistent aim to support and optimise customer’s operations, this unique system has been identified as the future for Havi’s supply chain, and Andreas is confident that this will be the key to acquiring new business in Poland. The company is also evolving in line with demand from clientele such as McDonald’s for more eco-friendly and environmentally aware logistics services. The distribution centres have highly sophisticated heat energy systems installed to avoid the wastage of excess heat and research is being carried out into the access of bio diesel for trucks in Poland. Furthermore, the Spanish sector of Havi Logistics started utilising solar energy for the powering of its freezers and chillers last year and the Group is investigating the possibility of installing such technology in other regions.
Havi Logistics Poland has an aggressive growth plan for the coming years as Andreas highlights: “We want to increase our service revenue significantly within the next five years, mainly through the acquisition of new clients. We will focus on a few bigger customers where we can establish a dedicated supply chain and customer specific service rather than having many smaller clients – we are looking for quality over quantity.”
