With the largest fleet of zero emission vehicles in the express sector, TNT is committed to reducing its carbon footprint by 40 per cent. In January 2012 TNT UK began rolling out its new fleet after announcing an extensive programme to replace tractor and trailer units with more environmentally friendly options. Overall, TNT is to replace 107 Linehaul Tractor Units, 22 of which have already been replaced.

Simon Harper, TNT’s director of operations, said: “This equipment will be deployed across the network to equalise annual mileage and to meet the revised London Emission Zone (LEZ) regulations which were introduced on January 3rd 2012.

“Additionally, we have just deployed 100 new ‘Cheetah Fastback’ trailers as part of our ongoing Trailer Replacement Programme. This equipment has been used to provide extra capacity through our peak periods across the network.”

TNT has also started to deliver the first of 190 new five-tonne vehicles and 60 new 7.5-tonne trucks as part of its upgrade programme. “The introduction of the five-tonne vehicles to replace some of our 7.5-tonners allows us to continue to maintain operational flexibility and to further reduce our CO2 output in line with our targets,” said Simon.

TNT has also signed up to a trial of longer semi-trailers and double-decker trailers. The move follows significant debate within the transport and logistics industry and a full consultation process with the Department for Transport, which has issued a directive that it has authorised the use of longer trailers. The proposed trailers will be up to two metres longer, which will provide around 15 per cent extra capacity.

“These innovative, modern trailers offer exceptional loading capacity and space utilisation to keep freight costs down to a minimum, in these days of rising fuel prices,” added Simon.
