TNT Express is a global organisation that provides a wide range of express services to businesses and consumers around the world. With locations in more than 200 countries worldwide, the Group employs more than 80,000 people and boasts an operating income of 180 million euros.
TNTis the European market leader in global express, logistics and international mail services. It is recognised as the UK’s leading business-to-business express delivery operator with the largest individual share of the national market, and delivers in excess of 100 million items per annum on behalf of UK businesses.
Established in the UK in 1978, the company has developed its leading position in the time-sensitive express delivery market through organic growth. TNT Express Services UK & Ireland is a vital component of the newly formed independent company TNT Express N.V. a listed public company which came into being in May 2011 following its demerger from its sister company TNT Mail (now called PostNL). TNT Express now stands alone as one of the world’s leading express delivery companies.
When it comes to the environment, TNT has impeccable credentials having topped the prestigious Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI) for the past four years and being accredited with the Carbon Trust Standard in 2010.
With the largest fleet of zero emission vehicles in the express sector, TNT is committed to reducing its carbon footprint by 40 per cent. In January 2012 TNT UK began rolling out its new fleet after announcing an extensive programme to replace tractor and trailer units with more environmentally friendly options. Overall, TNT is to replace 107 Linehaul Tractor Units, 22 of which have already been replaced.
Simon Harper, TNT’s director of operations, said: “This equipment will be deployed across the network to equalise annual mileage and to meet the revised London Emission Zone (LEZ) regulations which were introduced on January 3rd 2012.
“Additionally, we have just deployed 100 new ‘Cheetah Fastback’ trailers as part of our ongoing Trailer Replacement Programme. This equipment has been used to provide extra capacity through our peak periods across the network.”
TNT has also started to deliver the first of 190 new five-tonne vehicles and 60 new 7.5-tonne trucks as part of its upgrade programme. “The introduction of the five-tonne vehicles to replace some of our 7.5-tonners allows us to continue to maintain operational flexibility and to further reduce our CO2 output in line with our targets,” said Simon.
TNT has also signed up to a trial of longer semi-trailers and double-decker trailers. The move follows significant debate within the transport and logistics industry and a full consultation process with the Department for Transport, which has issued a directive that it has authorised the use of longer trailers. The proposed trailers will be up to two metres longer, which will provide around 15 per cent extra capacity.
“These innovative, modern trailers offer exceptional loading capacity and space utilisation to keep freight costs down to a minimum, in these days of rising fuel prices,” added Simon.
Given TNT’s approach to innovation and its willingness to embrace new technology, it is no surprise to learn that the company has won an unprecedented 30 Motor Transport Awards in the last 23 years. Indeed, TNT is acknowledged as an innovative force in the express industry – an organisation that sets and
raises ‘the bar’.
Historically the company has delivered a number of ‘firsts’ in the industry, such as creating the first guaranteed nationwide door-to-door, business-to-business next day delivery service, developing a first-to-market range of time sensitive early morning delivery options and launching the first nationwide door-to-door same day delivery service. The company’s achievements have been recognised in the past with the ultimate business accolade - The Queen’s Award for Enterprise (Innovation category).
This dedication to continuous improvement stretches throughout the organisation, and includes suppliers and customers. This means that TNT Express is more than happy to support clients on any business project and provide the best advice on transport solutions for their products. In addition, the company is glad to share its most recent successes and wins in improving supply chain performance, for the benefit of customers. In fact, when it comes to the supply chain, TNT is keen to assist its customers to become more efficient and streamlined.
Through its specialist outsourcing services division, Business Solutions, TNT offers customers innovative, fully integrated solutions to achieve efficiencies and cut costs while maintaining good governance and compliance.
Services range from scanning and data capture, print services, secure box and file archiving, digital archiving, magnetic media management and internal mail solutions, inter-site distribution and supply chain management to on-site physical and mailroom management.
Overall, TNT is committed to delivering a superior customer experience and it continuously aims to exceed customers’ expectations whether it is in the transfer of goods and documents around the world or outsourced services. By providing the most reliable and efficient solutions in distribution and logistics, TNT is able to deliver value along the entire extent of the supply chain.
